beyond the noise
i had a thought. people sometimes perceive my focus on projects and solitary time as social withdrawal, but it is actually a pursuit of intentionality.
it is easy to get caught up in the immediate, high-energy environment of social settings. while i certainly value those experiences, i have become more selective about how i spend my time. my focus is less about rejecting the social experience and more about protecting my energy for the pursuits that truly matter to me.
living with adhd, i have learned that managing my attention and energy is critical. there are days when the “hollow” feeling of distraction takes over, and maintaining focus can feel like an uphill battle. it is tempting to default to the path of least resistance. this means spending time or resources in ways that provide short-term gratification but don’t serve my long-term self.
i’ve had to confront the reality that the habits i form today are the foundation of who i will be in twenty years. there was a time when i didn’t spend much energy thinking about my future self, but my perspective has shifted. now, when i feel the pull of distraction or the urge to check out, i try to remind myself that my energy is a finite resource.
i am not suggesting that life should be devoid of fun or spontaneity. i believe in finding a balance. it is about recognizing when my actions are aligned with the person i am working to become, and when they are simply a way to pass the time. i am consciously choosing to build a life i am excited to inhabit in the long run, rather than just moving from one weekend to the next.
