the echo chamber of arguments

published: 5 May 2026

i just want to be understood. when i am arguing with someone i care about, i have this terrible habit of going in circles. i do not care about winning. i do not want the moral high ground. i just want the other person to understand why i feel the way i do. if i am starting to get overwhelmed, i do not need a debate. i need empathy. i need to be told it is going to be okay.

the guilt spiral: my default is assuming everything is my fault. if the vibe shifts, i did it. if they are quiet, they hate me. i absorb the blame because i am terrified of conflict. i know logically not everything is on me, but in the heat of the moment, i just need to feel safe.

i hate how much i obsess over these moments after they are done. it is a vicious cycle where i end up apologising for things that never required an apology in the first place. i have realised that my brain tries to jump to the worst possible conclusion just to get the discomfort over with. if i admit it is my fault first, maybe the other person will stop being angry. maybe the tension will break. it is a desperate, messy way to manage a relationship, and i am trying to unlearn it. it is exhausting to live as if you are constantly under fire, waiting for the next accusation, even when none are coming.
